spoken in the shop, vol. 1.

So I'm an eavesdropper. I can't help it. I was basically trained to be this way. Journalism major and all that. As it turns out, a bookstore/cupcake shop combo is the perfect place to overhear some pretty quirky conversations. Unfortunately, I also typically run the shop solo, which means I can't relay what I hear to a coworker -- no shared eye rolls or elbow nudges. I get my kicks, then, by writing down it down. Maybe one day something I hear will turn into book fodder. Until then, it gets put on the blog.

On using the store as a library
"Can I borrow this book for class and bring it right back?"

|||

On first world problems
"I've had such a horrible day. For starters, I haven't had enough coffee to drink, and now I can't pick out which cupcakes I want."

|||

On Where the Wild Things Are
"I just never got the hype over this book. I don't get it. What does it mean?"

|||

On buying books where you buy your jugs of olive oil
"I think this is the book I want to buy him for Christmas, but I'll just get it from Costco."

|||

On parenting
"Is it okay if I just leave my kids here while I shop?"

|||

On bargains
"Don't you sell anything for 99 cents?"

|||

On customer service
"How much are all of these books on the wall?" (said while pointing to an entire shelf of assorted bestselling novels)

|||

On parenting, again
"I don't read out loud to my kid. She can't read yet, so why bother? Kids can't learn by audio anyway."

|||

On sarcasm
"The cards you sell just aren't mean enough."

|||

On books as addiction, a subject with which I am familiar
"Shopping here is basically like setting me in a huge vat of crack."

Haha! Love that last quote.
But otherwise, oh dear...I'm really worried about that parent who doesn't read to their child.

Oh dear! How do you respond to those questions? They do make excellent blog content though! The one about reading aloud makes me worried too!

I am also a natural eavesdropper, it is nice to know I'm not alone!
My only question is how someone can not "get" Where the Wild Things Are, it is purely delightful and a great reminder to be careful about wishing away the life you have.

So funny the things we overhear...especially in the customer service world. People can be crazy.

Thankyou for sharing these laughs. I'd love more 'horrible' days like the first word problems one!

The parenting quote about kids not learning by listening is STUPID. I would've hit her in the face. Jk. Kind of. xoxo
